Found our way to Rothenburg, a quaint walled city. Upon arrival, E1 & E2 had no interest in getting out. All they wanted to do was continue to laze around in all the room in the back of the van. After a brief discussion, we decided to leave them in there while we we took a look around. We found a quaint gausthaus and they had two rooms. We took them and walked back to the van to get the girls. We were gone less than 10 minutes, but when we arrived Emma was hysterical and Ellie was madder than a hornet that we had left. Evidently the van had a motion sensor alarm for the INSIDE and whenever they made the first move it went off. Lesson learned - do not leave children unattended in a car.
After a nice four-hour nap, we made our way inside the city down the cobblestone streets. It rained on us intermitently but did not spoil our day. We had a nice dinner of German meatloaf, spaetzle (like a German pasta) and wiener schnitzel and then set out to explore the town. It was amazing to walk down cobblestone streets and not have to dodge cars. The only cars going in are for the workers in the shops.
We had an interesting night as none of us slept very well. Ellie and Emma were in a room across the hall from us, and I woke up at 3 a.m. with both of them standing outside our door. They had been sound asleep from 9 p.m. but promptly woke up at 2:30. That lead to a bed-shoving match and finally a trip across the hall. I ended up with Ellie as a bedmate and Woody took Emma. I think Ellie and I finally got back to sleep around 5 a.m.
Had a wonderful German breakfast with a soft-boiled egg in an egg cup - a first for the girls - and a plate of various hams and cheeses. We left out shortly thereafter for the 2 hour drive to Katja's house.
Here are a few pictures from yesterday - in no particular order. If you clicked on the "send update" box on this blog, it only sends out an e-mail at midnight saying I've updated, not immediately like on caringbridge.
Will update from Katja's soon.
